What is Trauma?

Trauma is more than a painful memory—it’s an overwhelming experience that can disrupt your emotions, behaviors, and relationships. It may stem from one specific moment, or many cumulative times that exceeded your capacity to cope:

  • Adverse childhood experiences
  • Betrayal or infidelity
  • Abuse or neglect
  • Accidents, hospitalization, or illness
  • War, violence, or loss

Trauma can leave you feeling stuck, disconnected, or unable to fully engage with life. But healing is possible.

Afraid to Face the Past?

We get it. We are very particular about how we help people heal from past traumatic experiences. You may feel like revisiting those moments could break open a dam of emotions, leaving you a helpless wreck for days or weeks to come. That is why we only place trauma clients with team members who are not just trauma-informed, but trauma-trained.

Our therapists know how to help you process past trauma where it is stored in your body and nervous system in a titrated (measured), cautious manner where you are not re-traumatized or overwhelmed by those very difficult memories.

While our therapists have the tools, you will be the one in the driver’s seat, empowered to set a pace that works for you. We give you full control over the process and honor your autonomy as well as the wisdom of your body in knowing the correct pace for your healing work.

Trauma Counseling FAQs

Is online trauma counseling effective?

Yes! Studies show it’s as effective as in-person therapy for trauma recovery. Our team uses empirically-validated approaches that have been adapted to online video counseling.

Can couples benefit from trauma therapy?

Yes, couples can absolutely benefit from trauma therapy. Trauma can affect both individuals in a relationship, and it can have a significant impact on the dynamics of the partnership. Trauma therapy helps couples address past experiences that may be causing emotional pain, trust issues, or communication problems, and provide them with the tools to heal, grow, and support each other through challenging experiences.

Will each session leave me unglued for several days after?

Therapevo’s therapy sessions are designed to be supportive and healing, not overwhelming. While it’s possible that processing deep emotions during a session could leave you feeling vulnerable or emotional afterward, the goal is to create a safe space for healing, where you feel understood and empowered. While some people may feel a bit unsettled or emotional after a session, most report feeling lighter or more at ease as they progress through therapy. Your therapist will guide you through the process and help you build coping mechanisms for any emotional responses.
