How it Works

At Therapevo, we provide a personalized and proven approach to relationship counseling. Unlike generalized platforms, our family-led team of licensed therapists specializes in helping couples and individuals rebuild, renew, and recover their relationships through evidence-based methods.

In a nutshell, we help you move from a negative, harmful cycle into a positive, nurturing and secure cycle that only increases the safety and connection you feel over time. We start by understanding your unique story through assessing your relational dynamic in our first sessions together. From there, we guide you through a structured, three-step process:

01

Understand Relational Patterns

Identify cycles, emotions, and underlying needs that shape your relationship.

02

Rebuild Emotional Connection

Rediscover and express your emotional needs and work together to foster acceptance and engagement.

03

Create Lasting Change

Develop practical solutions to longstanding challenges and build new ways of relating based on trust and care—equipping you with tools to sustain your progress long after counseling ends.

Tackling Counseling Doubts Together

What if my spouse doesn’t want to come to counseling with me?

That’s a tough spot to be in. There’s a lot of reasons why some people are reluctant to come to marriage counseling. We would recommend gently exploring those reasons with your spouse.

Aim for understanding rather than just trying to convince him or her. Often there’s some fear(s) behind the reluctance, and when that fear is acknowledged and support is extended they may be willing to try it out.

Questions & Answers

Therapevo

1.

Q: I’m going to get blamed for everything that’s wrong in our relationship, just like what happens at home.

A: Our therapists take what is known as a non-pathologizing approach, meaning that we look beyond the surface behaviors and complaints to the underlying issues that drive classic complaints like nagging, disengagement, criticism, etc. We help you understand and repair the roots of the dysfunction in your relationship!

2.

Q: Our previous therapist just took my partner’s side, and I’m not willing to do that again.

A: Our approach is to take the side of the relationship! That’s whose side we are on: the side of your marriage! And we help you shift towards the same perspective so that you can work together to fix what happens between you, instead of the classically impossible approach of trying to fix your partner. The only time we get one-sided is if we see an active addiction or domestic abuse or an active affair: in those cases, we do ask the offending partner to reflect on whether they wish to pursue those behaviors over and above the marriage. We usually recommend individual therapy to start in these cases, with the hope of returning to couple’s work once resolved.

3.

Q: I don’t want to be in marriage therapy for the rest of my life!

A: The most commonly used modality on our team is EFCT, which shows significant change after just 16-24 sessions. Typically, couples come to us after several years of distress! So you can understand that it does take time to shift old patterns. However, we don’t want to be your forever-therapist! Our goal is to help you shift out of your negative cycles into a new positive cycle that equips you to solve conflict on your own. In fact, we feel most successful when we hear our couples are solving their problems without us!

4.

Q: I don’t know if I have the energy to fix this any more.

A: We hear you. Unfortunately, by the time one partner is finally ready to work on the relationship, the other one is often burned out. If you want out, we’re not going to make you stay or try to guilt you into staying. However, if you want to try again: we’ll validate the exhaustion and that burnt-out feeling you have, and help you begin to pick up the pieces and build a new, healthier, life-giving dynamic between you.
